Richard,
I'm not sure how sound my knee is yet and I don't want to rush back into
action. Therefore you should consider me on the injured reserve for the
next four weeks. By that time I'd hope to have an MRI consultation with an
orthopedic surgeon. Good luck to you guys. I'm glad to hear that the bats
have come alive. Keep me posted on the games.

- Due to a three-way tie for first after 9 games, Scott randomly chose
1 team to avoid playing the other 2. Sharks == Auburn.
- Tanne showed up and would have played if absolutely necessary.
- Richard slid awkwardly into second on Frank's grounder in the first
and sat out the entire game defensively. X-rays negative.
- To start the 3rd, Dave-Frank-Tony turned a 1-6-3 single play, as Dave
deflected a liner up the middle that Frank alertly picked up and threw
to first.
- With one on and none out, a Mauler looped one over Brad, who turned
and ran, caught the ball over his shoulder, and gunned strongly to 1B,
where Tony came off the bag to tag the runner out.
- Joe in RF, running toward the foul line, reached behind his head and
made an excellent catch for the second out of the fifth. In the sixth
he laid out for one near the line and caught it, but the ball popped
out as he hit the ground.
- Tony hit a good line drive home run deep to right that Michael
Scholen froze on momentarily. Mitch's triple landed between RC and RF.
Brad killed tha ball all night, losing about 4 over the fence. Earl also
went outless and led the team in RBIs despite batting only three times.

- On a liner between Tony in RC and Annie in RF, Tony nicked the
ball, yet Annie still caught it.
- Deb backhanded Cindee Dlugos's hard grounder to her right,
flipped to Frank for a close out at 2B. Frank then relayed to 1B
for the double play.
- Richard slid nicely home to the side away from 1B on his home
run, which was hit to right.
- Frank picked up 100 points in OBP on the day. Brad picked up 83.

- Offense likes Farnsworth: everyone got a hit, scored a run, drove in a
run. No outs from either Brad or Steve, and Rich's only out came when he
fouled out on a 3-2 pitch that the ump called illegal when the Sharks
were up 25-2. Dave's only out was on the first pitch of the game, and
Greg, Frank, Richard, and Earl also made only 1 out each.
- Annie got two big two-rbi hits, one to cap the scoring at 31.
- With a big lead, the defense for the fourth included Mitch at 2B, Deb at
SS, Rich at 3B with Greg and steve on the bench. Rich had three balls
go underneath him, Deb had a couple go by her, Deb did field one but threw
wildly to 3B to miss the force, Deb and Mitch collided
on a comebacker to Dave, Dave dropped a short pop-up, Earl at C missed a
throw to the plate. Frank in LC bailed Richard in RC out when the latter
lost a ball in the twilight, but on the next play dropped a short liner
that would have ended the inning.
- In the fifth, the Maulers hit well again, but Dave struck one out (and
walked Adrian), and Rich and Joe got a pickoff at 1B.
With the tying run on 3B and the winning run on 1B, Rick Stiebel lifted
one into the outfield. Mitch charged down the hill, slightly overran
the ball, then reached back to catch the final out.

- Offensive play of the day: with the Sharks down 7-6 and runners
on second and third, Annie lined one down the first base line that
Duane Roth got his glove on but could not control. The ball rolled
out of play for a double, scoring two.
- Great hitting all around, as Greg, Rich, Tom, and Dave did not
make an out. The team OBP was very high as Earl hit into two
double plays and the team only batted 4 times, leaving only 8
other outs.
- Tom tripled deep and high to right.
- Defensive play of the day: in the fourth with the bases loaded
and 1 out, Richard at SS could not cleanly field a hard hit
grounderbut caught a break as the ball bounced toward second
base. Supposedly looking like he was about to face plant,
Richard picked up the ball, stepped on the base, took a body
blow from the lefty from first, and threw to Rich at 1B for the
double play. Rich got low for that throw, which seemed to stay
a foot off the ground the entire way.
- Greg had good catches in RC, and Joe caught a hard liner in RF.

- Richard led off with a fly over Toby, playing shallow in RF, with
only 9 on D. Richard's second home run landed on the opposite infield,
as did Tom's and Tony's homers. Greg's triple was a liner to LC.
- Hitting star of the day was either Rich, with 5 clean singles, or
Annie, once again with key RBIs to break the game open.
- Tom, running for Rich from 2B in the first inning, tagged and scored
on Tony's deep sacrifice fly.
- Earl showed up late after a telecon with the Japanese for MRO launch,
then hit two good singles in the 11-run 4th.
- Steve snared John Flores's low liner for the first out of the second.
After a swinging bunt,
Frank fielded a sharp grounder to his left, got the force at 2B and
threw to Tony at 1B for the double play.
- After throwing a ball beneath Rich at 1B, Richard at SS fielded
the next batter's grounder and flipped to Deb, who threw to Rich for
the double play for the first two outs of the fifth. Greg ended the
game with a nice catch while ostensibly backing up Annie.
- Deb announced this is her last season as a regular, as she is
leaving Caltech to become the Associate Dean for Business for
Loyola's law school.
- Toby Solorzano and Ken Lawrence joined Annie, Mario, Michael, Stephen,
Richard, Rich, Steve, Frank, and Earl at Round Table.

- With Angel and Brad on first and second, Annie hit a single to the
outfield. As Angel neared home, the throw came into Laverne Guzman,
so Angel cut to his left. His right knee buckled, and he crashed into
the fence behind home, though he did score. He suspects a torn ACL.
Many people, including Swatms, volunteered to help afterwards - Richard
and Steve took him to Huntington Memorial.
- Tough offensive day. Mitch did have a good triple to dead center to
earn the Sharks' last run. Greg Osterman drove in the two runs before
that and led off the 8th with a double, but the following batters failed
to score him. Brad also hit well.
- With Annie on 2B in the 7th with one out, tie game, Steve looped one to
right. The RF caught one on his knees. Richard coaching third called
for Annie to tag, but a strong throw beat her by 5 feet.
- Defensively, GregO had a tough day at SS, converting about half his
chances. Mitch in LF fought the sun at about the same rate. Greg
had a beautiful assist to Brad at 3B to end an inning. Annie at C picked
off their overagressive 2nd woman (Sarah) at 1B. Joe at 1B caught a
twisting foul pop and flipped to Steve covering 1B to double off Tom
Elliott.

- IP's 7th inning: deep fly to left that Angel caught while gauging
his distance from the wall, easy grounder to Steve on the last batter
in the order, then hit, hit, hit, hit, hit to put the tying run on
second, then a tricky bouncer to Steve's left that he took to 1B himself
from the lefty who had gone 2-for-2 with a walk.
- Offensive stars: Angel hit the ball so hard that IP gave him a 0-out
intentional walk in the last inning. Annie had three huge run-scoring
singles, then scored after each one. Deb had a good run-scoring grounder
in the 3rd, then beat out a swinging pop-up bunt to keep the 4th inning
alive, though Frank nearly came off the bag at 3rd thinking the inning
was over. Charlie, Rich, and Joe also came through big.
- Greg pasted the ball but came out with only two hits. One frozen rope
hit the trailer in center for a foul, and the tallest guy on IP (Jacob)
happened to be playing third when Greg hit another just within Jacob's
reach in the 4th. That one might have broken the game open.
- Deb looked bad on two short loopers from IP's second woman. The first
drove in two runs with two out in the first. However, she recovered to
catch the hardest hit IP ball of the day, a liner to her right that she
speared then threw to first for a double play in the 4th.
- Richard looked bad at 3B on two plays: not charging the 3rd IP woman's
swinging bunt that Steve stepped toward, then not covering 3rd on a
grounder to Frank that the runner from 2B went to third on. However, he
recovered to make a nice charging, short-hop pick up to end the IP 5th.
- Super-sub Charlie at C leapt to catch a tricky foul tip for strike three
for the second out of the 6th. He almost picked off the potential
tying run in the 7th after the 4th hit.
- Both Greg in LC and Joe in RC made good charging catches, though
Joe had a little difficulty fielding grounders later. Frank had solid
D at short and hits in the two big innings. Steve had a hand in about
7 putouts, including an assist to Charlie at home.
- Dinner: everyone but Greg, Annie, Frank. Turns out Angel and Stacy
hosted a good 4th of July party - *sniffle*.

- Angel's home run went to deep right. The key hit of the day was
probably Frank's go-ahead single to center to score two in the third.
- Frank had a good short-hop pick up in the 4th plus a 6-3 double play
in the sixth, also managing to give Brad at 2B the evil eye for not
covering. Angel in LF and Annie in RC made nice, knee high catches
on dying liners. Joe moved very well to run down two balls in RF.
- Bad play of the day: Angel skied one to RF in the 7th. The
young, over-aggressive RCF pushed Ramiro Perez in RF out of the way
but dropped the ball. Rich from 1B could not overcome his momentum
back to 1B and got forced out at 2B.
- Spectators: Mario, Michael, Stephen, Tanne, Madeline. Everyone except
Brad went to dinner at Round Table.

- Though the game ended and the ump left after Tony's second home run,
the two teams finished one more full inning.
- Richard had about 5 assists at shortstop, one thanks to Joe's good
pick up of a short-hopped throw.
- Earl had about 3 Ks. In the third, Earl went K, BB, BB, K, BB. The
next batter hit a sharp grounder between 3-4, but Deb made an excellent
stop and toss for the third out.
- Hitting star of the game: Tony, with a grand slam, that bailed out
Richard and Tom for popping up before, and a 3-run homer, that ended
the game. Stacy also had two good hits.
- Steve showed up after his basketball game.
